BINGO!

This past Friday night East Hill’s PTA held their first ever Family BINGO night at CMS. It was a huge success! A big thank you goes out to Mary Kay DeVore and Michelle Hess for coordinating the event, and to everyone else involved in the planning of the event. Thank you to those of you who were able to donate prizes and baked goods as well. Almost everyone walked away with a prize.

Also last Friday we held our character education assembly for the month. Miss Kolis’, Mrs. McDonald’s, and Mrs. Galaska’s 5th graders talked to our school about Citizenship. They presented many ways to be a good citizen, including being a good neighbor and friend, picking up after yourself, and recycling, just to name a few. West Genesee residents will be able to exercise their citizenship rights on May 21st by voting on the school budget. Polls will be open at the high school from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Come hear Dr. Brown present the budget on May 7th at 7:00 p.m. in the high school Large Group Instruction room.

The next two weeks will be busy administering NYS assessments to our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Please make sure your child is present for these tests and is well-rested and well-fed. They are very well-prepared!

Happy Spring

It is spring according to the calendar, but it certainly doesn’t look or feel like it, that’s for sure! Hopefully it is right around the corner.

Last Friday we were treated to our annual Irish Dancing Assembly with dancers from the Johnston School of Dance. Some of our own East Hill Irish dancers from the Harrington School and the Montague School were also able to join them for a couple of dances. This assembly is always a treat for the entire school.

We held our 3rd annual science fair last night. What a great turnout we had! Thank you to all of you who worked with your child(ren) to complete a project. The kids were so proud of their work, as they definitely should be! The science fair is always my favorite event of the year.

Next Tuesday night our 3rd graders will perform their concert in the gym. The concert begins at 7:00. Spring break begins on Friday, March 29th and students will not return until Tuesday, April 9th. April 8th is now a staff development day. Because students will not be in attendance on April 8th, the April PTA meeting has been moved to Monday, April 15th at 6:30 in the East Hill library. The PTA will be holding a BINGO night at CMS on Friday, April 12th at 6:00. Be looking for more information about this exciting event.

As mentioned in a previous update, the NYS ELA assessments will be administered April 16th, 17th, and 18th, and the NYS Math Assessments will be administered April 24th, 25th, and 26th. The teachers have worked hard to make sure the students are well prepared for these exams. If you could avoid appointments on these days it would be appreciated. A good night’s sleep and a good breakfast would also be helpful!

In looking ahead to May there are a couple of important dates to mark on the calendar. Open House will be held on Thursday, May 9th from 6:30 – 7:30. The 4th and 5th grade concert will be held on Thursday, May 16th at 7:00 at the high school, and the school budget vote will take place on Tuesday, May 21st.

March Madness

March is jam-packed with events at East Hill so get your calendars ready! Enhanced Enrichment begins this Thursday and runs the next two Thursdays as well from 3:45 to 4:45. Please make sure to pick your child up on time. The PTA is still looking for a couple of volunteers to help out in the classroom. Next Tuesday our 5th graders will graduate from their CODE program. The ceremony will be held in the gymnasium at 6:30. 5th graders should report to their classrooms by 6:15. CODE T-shirts will be provided for the students. Nice pants are encouraged for both the boys and girls if they have them, or a longer skirt or dress for the girls.

Next Wednesday night, March 13th,  East Hill parents are invited to attend an Olweus parent presentation in the library at 6:30. Olweus is the bullying prevention program that West Genesee has adopted and is using to help prevent bullying in our schools. I hope you can come to hear more about East Hill’s efforts to stop bullying.

The 3rd annual Science Fair will be held on Tuesday, March 19th at 6:30 p.m. Students will be able to drop off their projects on Monday, March 18th from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., or on Tuesday, March 19th from 7:00 – 8:00 a.m. Projects should be taken home at the conclusion of the night. Our 3rd graders will perform their chorus concert on Tuesday, March 26th at 7:00 p.m. They will perform for our school that morning at 9:30 a.m. Spring break begins on Friday, March 29th. I’m not sure we could pack much more into this month!

In looking ahead to April, 3rd – 5th graders will take the NYS English Language Arts Assessment on April 16, 17, and 18, and will take the NYS Mathematics Assessment on April 24, 25, and 26. It is greatly appreciated if you could avoid scheduling appointments on these days. Thank you, and have a great rest of the week

I'm Back!

It’s great to be back here at East Hill. Five weeks is too long of a time to be away. I love being able to walk around the building again, seeing all of the smiling faces. I honestly think the entire second grade had a growth spurt while I was gone. I hope you were able to enjoy the winter break. It’s the first time my family hasn't gone skiing during the break in a long time but it was still nice spending time with the kids.

We have several important events coming up. First of all, Will Amica, one of our 5th graders, won the NYS Hoop Shoot Semi-Finals in January and will now advance to the NYS Hoop Shoot Finals this Saturday in Seneca Falls. Good Luck Will! The PTA’s Enhanced Enrichment classes start next week. Registration forms are due this Friday, March 1st. All yearbook orders are also due this Friday.

It’s not too late to sign up for the 3rd Annual East Hill Science Fair. The deadline to apply has been extended to this Friday, March 1st. Students are encouraged to enter alone, with a family member, or with a friend or two. It’s my favorite event of the year. This year it will be held on Tuesday, March 19th at 6:30 p.m. Students will be able to view the displays during the day. If you are interested in helping out with the Science Fair, please let me know as I could definitely use some help.

Our 5th graders have been participating in the CODE program for several weeks now on Thursday mornings. CODE stands for Community Oriented Drug Education. The mission of the CODE program is a partnership with the community, school district, parents, police, and its children to ensure that each student has the appropriate information and skills necessary to face the challenges and pressures they will encounter in society. Our CODE program is taught by Officer Diane Brand. 5th Grade CODE graduation will take place on Tuesday, March 12th at 6:30.

Happy New Year!

I hope you and your family had a nice holiday break and had a good start to the new year. I’m still having a bit of trouble putting a “13” in the date!

We are back in the swing of things at East Hill with special events for a number of grade levels. Our 2^nd and 4^th graders visited the inside of the OCM BOCES Planetarium that was set up in our library last week. The second graders learned about day and night while the 4^th graders explored phases of the moon. Our 5^th graders will begin the CODE (Community Oriented Drug Education) program this Thursday with Officer Diane Brand. CODE graduation will be held on Tuesday, March 12^th at 6:30 p.m.

All of our students in grades K-5 will take part in screening over the next two weeks to assess their progress in math and literacy. The results of these screenings will be used to identify which students are in need of additional support. Some of these screenings will be done on the computer and some will be done on good, old-fashioned pencil and paper.

We have some upcoming events to note. First of all, school is closed on Monday, January 21^st in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. School is also closed Monday, January 28^th, as that day is devoted to professional development for our teachers. School is closed for February break (18^th- 22^nd).

Kindergarten registration will be held the week after February break. Please pass this information on to any of your neighbors who will be enrolling their child at East Hill. 

We will be holding our 3^rd annual Science Fair this year on March 19th. Students will be receiving information on the science fair this week. This is a non-competitive event that encourages students to have fun while exploring science. Students can work alone, with a friend, a neighbor, or a sibling. It’s my favorite event of the year.

I will be taking a medical leave beginning January 18^th to get a full hip replacement. I can’t wait to be pain-free again so that I can get out into the classrooms again on a more frequent basis. Christine Calandra, administrative intern, will be taking over for me in my absence.  Please feel free to contact her with any questions or concerns. I will be reachable via email. I am confident that things will run smoothly in my absence just as they did earlier this year.

Season's Greetings!

Season’s Greetings!

Please forgive me for not communicating via this blog in over a month. As some of you may be aware, I’ve been out of the building quite a bit during these past four weeks recovering (or should I say, trying to recover) from hip surgery. The building seemed to run smoothly without me thanks to the great staff we have here at East Hill. Thanks to Christine Calandra, administrative intern, who oversaw the building in my absence. I’m fortunate to work with such great people, that’s for sure.

The December Character Education assembly was all about Caring and Compassion, organized by Miss O’Keefe. To start things off, Miss O’Keefe engaged everyone with “Fit Friday” exercises (see picture). After we were all warmed-up, Miss O’Keefe taught us about compassion by sharing different definitions of compassion, sharing two stories about compassion (including the recent story in the news about the New York City Police Officer purchasing a pair of boots for a homeless man), and having students share ideas about how to show compassion. The assembly concluded with everyone dancing and swaying to the song, Lean on Me. Wow! It was powerful! We are certainly fortunate to have Miss O’Keefe here at East Hill.

Speaking of caring and compassion, the soldiers came last week to retrieve the Salvation Army barrels which were overflowing with canned goods and other non-perishable items, thanks to your generosity and that of our students. The PTA’s annual Community Giving project was also a huge success. Due to everyone’s generous contributions, six families in our community will have more under their tree.

While we celebrate the holidays in the coming weeks, we know that the Sandy Hook community in Connecticut will be grieving. Our hearts and prayers go out to them at this time. I can assure you that we do everything possible at East Hill to keep your children safe. Mrs. Farley knows almost everyone in our school community, but if she does see an unfamiliar face she asks them to provide identification. I know this is sometimes inconvenient for people, but it is a necessary precaution that we must take. We also do not allow anyone to pick up your children if not listed on your emergency contact list. If you need to add anyone to your emergency pick-up list, please do this in person. Transportation changes must be in writing; parents cannot call to make a last minute change. This is also in the interest of safety. We practice many drills throughout the year, including fire drills, lock down drills, stay-in-place drills, and bomb threat drills. Administrators meet regularly to brainstorm and discuss what we would do to keep students safe in a variety of situations. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of your children.

On a happier note, holiday parties are scheduled for this Thursday at 2:00. If you are one of the scheduled parents helping out in the classroom, please leave siblings at home, sign-in at the office, and don’t arrive before 1:50pm. This helps us preserve as much instructional time as possible. On behalf of East Hill Elementary School, I wish you a safe and happy holiday spent with family and friends.

Correct! Adjournment was the final word spelled correctly at this year’s District Spelling Bee. Five students represented East Hill at this year’s Bee – Sandra Gardino, Maison Lamanna, Abigail Ray, Emma Santola, and Ella Watts. Liam Kelley and Jack Hickey were alternates. I was the official “pronouncer” again this year which is always a lot of fun. Congratulations to these students!

As you may have read from Dr. Brown’s blog, our district has coordinated efforts to help provide some relief to Hurricane Sandy victims. You should receive a letter home today from the school. We are collecting supplies by grade level as follows: Kindergarten – 6 Band-Aids (in a sandwich bag); 1st Grade – 1 washcloth; 2nd Grade – 1 nail clipper; 3rd Grade – 1 small container of hand sanitizer; 4th Grade – 1 bar of soap; and 5th Grade – 2, one-gallon plastic Ziploc bags. Thank you in advance for helping to support this project.

The Salvation Army has also dropped off their barrels. They are looking for non-perishable food items. They will be collecting these items through Friday, November 16th. I apologize that we are seeking donations for two different causes at the same time. Speaking of causes, it is my understanding that several people from the East Hill Community supported the Sarah Smiles fundraiser last Saturday. Our staff wore purple last Friday and also donated to this worthwhile cause in remembrance of our own Sarah Peek. I feel fortunate to be a part of such a giving and generous community.

Some reminders about upcoming events: There will not be any school on Monday, November 12th in observance of Veterans Day. Monday and Tuesday, November 19th and 20th will be half days. Students will be dismissed at 11:30 on these two days. AM kindergarteners will attend on Monday, and PM kindergarteners will attend on Tuesday. We have decided to devote Tuesday to anti-bullying activities at East Hill. Each class will be conducting a morning meeting and will read a picture book or story about bullying. They will then follow that up with a reading-related activity. It should be a great morning for the entire building.

Finally, we will not have school on Wednesday to Friday, November 21st through 23rd. Enjoy this time with your family. My next blog will be after the Thanksgiving holiday. Have a great rest of the week!
