Weekly Update

Dismissal Change
Due to the addition of several runs for the middle school, afternoon dismissal will be roughly 15 minutes later than usual. This means that students will be getting home later than they typically do. If you are picking up your children, please make sure you let the buses through if you are waiting in line as we will not let cars enter until all of the buses have arrived. Thank you!

Spirit Week!
This week is Spirit Week! Here is the schedule:
Monday: Hat/Sports Day
Tuesday: Beach Day (no bathing suits, please)
Wednesday: Wildcat Wednesday
Thursday: Tie Dye Day
Friday: Pajama Day!

Here are some pictures from today:

Pizza with the Police
As some of you may have heard, our school resource officer, Officer Macholl, is having a pizza lunch with each of our classes over the next couple of weeks. After lunch he takes the class out to look inside an actual police car and let's them blow the air horn. They are loving it, as you can imagine! Thank you to Office Macholl, and thank you to the PTA for helping to fund the pizza!

Please Obey Traffic Rules!
Speaking of police, I hate being the traffic police. However, I would hate to see someone hurt because of someone else not following the rules. For everyoneÅ› safety, please make sure you follow basic traffic rules when dropping off and picking up your children. I am hearing from several of our neighbors, and seeing this on occasion myself, that people are not coming to a stop at the stop signs, both at the corner of Blackmore and Parsons, as well as the other stop signs on Blackmore.  In addition, people aren't always obeying traffic laws while at the stop sign. As a reminder, when at a 3-way intersection, it is expected that you take turns. Please be patient, and follow the rules, so that everyone stays safe. Thank you!

PTA News
The PTA is holding a fundraiser at Charlee's Ice Cream on May 4th from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m.  Simply say the name "East Hill" when checking out and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to our school. You can dine in, take away, or drive thru! Stay tuned for information on the PTA's virtual Book Fair which takes place May 7th through May 20th, and the East Hill Jogathon which will take place during physical education classes the week of May 17th.

Purpose
This week we are focusing on the character strength of Connection and Purpose, which means you have beliefs about the meaning of life and your life's purpose. You seek to be part of something greater than yourself. Individuals with this strength might be described as believing, trusting, purposeful, and determined. For more about this character strength, click here. Last week we focused on the character strength Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence. Mrs. Ciciarelli's remote kindergarten class read the book, "Miss Rumphius", and painted lupines using watercolors and blowing through a straw. They came out beautiful! Lyra's and Emerson's are pictured below.
Lyra shows off the book and her beautiful painting.

Emerson did a great job!

East Hill Weekly Update

Spirit Week
Next week is Spirit Week! East Hill third graders wrote persuasive letters and voted on daily themes that inspired this districtwide event. The flier pictured below shows what students should wear each day. We will also remind the students on the daily announcements. Thank you to our third graders for the ideas!
Fun Hunt Winners
Thank you to the PTA for sponsoring this great activity for our students! There were over 80 entries in the Spring Break Fun Hunt. Each participant received a coupon for a free ice cream cone from Charlee's Ice Cream, and there were three grand prize winners. Blake, in first grade, won the Lego set. Eve, in second grade, won the American Girl Doll, and Joey, in 4th grade, won the free session to the Syracuse Warrior Factory. Thanks to the PTA, thanks to Charlee's Ice Cream, and congratulations to our participants!
Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence
This week we are focusing on the character strength of Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence. This means that you notice and value the world's beauty and people's skills. You don't take things for granted.  Appreciating excellence and beauty helps an individual experience positive emotions and connect to the world around him/her. For more about this character strength, click here

Ramadan Mubarak!
Happy Ramadan!  This year Ramadan began on the evening of Tuesday, April 13 and will end the evening of Wednesday, May 12. Ramadan concludes with Eid Al-Fitr, the “Festival of Breaking the Fast.”  To gain a better understanding about Ramadan and what it means to our Muslim community members, here is an essay written by West Genesee High School senior, Sereen Awawda. Thank you, Sereen, and Ramadan Mubarak!

Happy April!

Spring Break

I hope everyone had a nice spring break! I certainly did! I was able to take a brief trip to Florida to soak in the sunshine, bike, kayak, swim, eat, and of course, read - a lot! I'm sure a lot of you had fun participating in the Scavenger Hunt over the break. As a reminder, entries are due this Friday. Send your entry to wgehpta@westgenesee.org. Here are a few pictures the PTA graciously shared with me!

Positivity Project

This week during P2 time we will focus on "Identifying and Appreciating the Good in Others".  According to the Positivity Project, This element means that you actively look for the good in others. Identifying and appreciating the good in others isn’t always what comes naturally. Often, it’s easier to blame others for our problems or find flaws in others to use as excuses for our own jealousy, bitterness, or resentment. The problem is that this negativity usually leads to problems – for ourselves, for the other person, and for our relationships. To see the good in others, we must first slow down and take the time to pay attention. Look for the intentions behind people’s words and actions. If you feel slighted, you can use perspective and ask, “Did that person intend to hurt me or did they just come across in an awkward manner?” It’s also useful to see the skills and character strengths others possess. Doing so leverages your appreciation of excellence and strengthens your leadership capacity.

Important Dates from the PTA

  • Yearbook orders are due today! (ybpay.lifetouch.com, ID# 10705621)
  • Scavenger Hunt entries are due this Friday, 4/9
  • The next PTA meeting is 4/12 at 6:30 (RSVP to wgehpta@westgenesee.org)

They are having an Earth Day apparel sale through Holy Shirt. There is an option to have the shirts delivered directly to your home. Here is the link to purchase.

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten Registration for the 2021-2022 school year opened virtually on December 1, 2020 and has been extended until April 30, 2021.
