East Hill Happenings

Positivity Project
This week's character strength is curiosity. Students have been watching videos and discussing quotes related to curiosity. If you are curious to learn more about the character strength of curiosity, click here. Next week students will learn about the character strength of open-mindedness.

PTA
We had a pretty good turnout at our first PTA meeting of the year. Thanks again to the PTA for funding the Positivity Project T-shirts. These shirts will be kept at school to ensure that everyone has theirs for our assemblies. Please consider joining PTA as they do a ton of wonderful things for our students. You can join or renew your membership online, or you can fill out a hard copy of a membership form. If you need one, just let us know. Membership is only $6.00.

Student Drop-Off
We are working to find a better solution to the current student drop-off situation. In the meantime, please be patient when dropping off your children. Many students are being dropped off in an unsafe location and cars are cutting in front of other cars creating a very dangerous situation. Once the buses leave the front circle, students can be dropped off at the front door.

East Hill's Expectations
We continue to reinforce our expectations of students to be respectful, responsible, and safe across all settings. They are doing a nice job of living up to these expectations!

Fuel for Learning
Breakfast is truly the most important meal of the day. There is a great deal of literature that documents its importance. Well documented, too, is the impact that hunger has: lower math scores, attention problems, and behavior, emotional, and academic problems. That’s why it is so important that our elementary students can eat breakfast and lunch, everyday. This short article provides a good summary of the importance of breakfast to our learners. Our cafeteria provides breakfast each day from 8:50 - 9:05 for $1.75. Speaking of food, please make sure your child does not have a negative account balance. You can pay in person, send in a check, or access your child's MySchoolBucks account online. If you need assistance bringing your account up to date, please let me know. Thank you!

Upcoming Dates
Jogathon: Friday, 9/29

A Great First Week!

We’ve had a great opening to the 2017-2018 school year! The Ice Cream Social was a big hit last Thursday night. A big thank you to our PTA for sponsoring this annual event.

Last Thursday and Friday students spent the morning learning what it means to be respectful, responsible, and safe on the bus, in the hallways, in the cafeteria, on the playground, upon arrival and dismissal, and during assemblies.
Mrs. Hesler explicitly teaches arrival behaviors.
Mrs. Reina explains appropriate assembly behavior.

Mrs. Rose explains responsibility, respect, and safety on the bus.

These student expectations blend seamlessly as an introduction to our brand new character education program, The Positivity Project. The Positivity Project teaches children by acknowledging and defining 24 different character strengths. These strengths are already a part of who we are as people. The program helps children to identify that as individuals we have these strengths and we continue to develop different strengths throughout life. It is such a positive way to appreciate the strengths in others as well as in ourselves! We kicked this program off this week by discussing the Other People Matter mindset.  The premise of this slogan is that building healthy and lasting relationships between and among people is going to make you happy because other people matter! We will be providing continuous information as the program unfolds.

Curriculum Night is tonight as follows:
K & 1st: 6:00 – 6:25
2nd & 3rd: 6:30 – 6:55
4th & 5th: 7:00 – 7:25
Please remember that this night is for parents and guardians. Don’t forget to attend one of the presentations on Standards Based Grading and Reporting which will be held in the cafeteria at 6:05, 6:35 and 7:05. Hope to see you there!

If you are on twitter, please follow the school @EHElementary.  Have a great rest of the week!
